libstdc++: Implement C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types
The following patch attempts to implement the C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types paper. This is quite complicated, because most of these classes which should be constexpr-ized use solely or mostly out of line definitions in libstdc++, both for historical, code size and dual ABI reasons, so that one can throw these as exceptions between TUs with old vs. new (or vice versa) ABIs. For this reason, logic_error/runtime_error and classes derived from it have the old ABI std::string object inside of them and the exported APIs from libstdc++.so.6 ensure the right thing. Now, because new invoked during constant evaluation needs to be deleted during the same constant evaluation and can't leak into the constant expressions, I think we don't have to use COW strings under the hood (which aren't constexpr I guess because of reference counting/COW) and we can use something else, the patch uses heap allocated std::string object (where __cow_constexpr_string class has just a pointer to that). As I think we still want to hide the ugly details if !consteval in the library, the patch exports 8 __cow_string class symbols (6 existing which were previously just not exported and 2 new ones) and if !consteval calls those through extern "C" _Zmangled_name symbols. The functions are always_inline. And then logic_error etc. have for C++26 (precisely for __cpp_lib_constexpr_exceptions >= 202502L) constexpr definitions of cdtors/methods. This results in slightly larger code (a few insns at most) at runtime for C++26, e.g. instead of calling say some logic error cdtor/method with 2 arguments it calls some __cow_string one with 2 arguments but + 8 bytes pointer additions on both. The patch also removes the __throw_format_error forward declaration which apparently wasn't needed for anything as all __throw_format_error users were either in <format> or included <format> before the uses, reverts the https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/libstdc++/2025-July/062598.html patch and makes sure __throw_* functions (only those for exception types which the P3378R2 or P3068R5 papers made constexpr usable and there are actually constexpr/consteval uses of those) are constexpr for C++26 constexpr exceptions. The patch does that by splitting the bits/functexcept.h header: 1) bits/functexcept.h stays for the __throw_* functions which are (at least for now) never constexpr (the <ios>, <system_error>, <future> and <functional> std::exception derived classes) or are never used or never used in constexpr/consteval contexts (<exception>, <typeinfo> std::exception derived classes and std::range_error). 2) bits/new_{throw,except}.h for __throw_bad_alloc/__throw_bad_array_new_length and std::bad_alloc/std::bad_array_new_length (where <new> includes <bits/new_except.h> and <bits/new_throw.h> as well for the C++26 constexpr exceptions case) 3) for the most complicated <stdexcept> stuff, one header addition to bits/stdexcept.h one header for the __throw_logic_error etc. forward declarations, one header for the __throw_logic_error etc. definitions and one header without header guards which will depending on __glibcxx_exc_in_string include one or the other because <string> vs. <string_view> vs. <stdexcept> have heavy interdependencies 2025-12-11 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR libstdc++/121114 libstdc++-v3/ * include/bits/version.def: Implement C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types. libstdc++: shared_mutex: Respond consistently to errors and deadlock
Make the shared_mutex::try_lock(), shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_until() and shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_shared_until() all handle errors from pthread functions consistently by returning false to indicate that the lock could not be taken. If _GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS is defined then unexpected errors, such as EDEADLK and EINVAL will cause an assertion failure. If _GLIBCXX_ASSERTIONS is not defined then these functions no longer ever return true incorrectly indicating that they have taken the lock. This removes the previous behaviour of looping on EDEADLK in try_lock_shared_until() and no longer returns true on EINVAL in all of these functions. (In theory at least it should not be possible to trigger EINVAL since 5dba17a3e709859968f939354e6e5e8d796012d3.) Unfortunately my reading of POSIX is that pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock[1], pthread_rwlock_timedrdlock pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock[2] and pthread_rwlock_timedwrlock are allowed to deadlock rather than return EDEADLK when trying to take a lock a second time from the same thread. This means that the deadlock tests cannot be enabled by default. I believe that the tests do work with glibc (2.31 & 2.36) and with the __shared_mutex_cv implementation though. libstdc++: Avoid overflow in timeout conversions [PR113327]
When converting from a coarse duration with a very large value, the existing code scales that up to chrono::seconds which overflows the chrono::seconds::rep type. For example, sleep_for(chrono::hours::max()) tries to calculate LLONG_MAX * 3600, which overflows to -3600 and so the sleep returns immediately. The solution in this commit is inspired by this_thread::sleep_for in libc++ which compares the duration argument to chrono::duration<long double>(nanoseconds::max()) and limits the duration to nanoseconds::max(). Because we split the duration into seconds and nanoseconds, we can use seconds::max() as our upper limit. We might need to limit further if seconds::max() doesn't fit in the type used for sleeping, which is one of std::time_t, unsigned int, or chrono::milliseconds. To fix this everywhere that uses timeouts, new functions are introduced for converting from a chrono::duration or chrono::time_point to a timespec (or __gthread_time_t which is just a timespec on Linux). These functions provide one central place where we can avoid overflow and also handle negative timeouts (as these produce errors when passed to OS functions that do not accept absolute times before the epoch). All negative durations are converted to zero, and negative time_points are converted to the epoch. The new __to_timeout_gthread_time_t function in <bits/std_mutex.h> requires adding <bits/chrono.h> to that header, but that only affects <syncstream>. All other consumers of <bits/std_mutex.h> were already including <bits/chrono.h> for timeouts (e.g. <shared_mutex> and <condition_variable>). libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: PR libstdc++/113327 PR libstdc++/116586 PR libstdc++/119258 PR libstdc++/58931 * include/bits/chrono.h (__to_timeout_timespec): New overloaded function templates for converting chrono types to timespec. * include/bits/std_mutex.h (__to_timeout_gthread_time_t): New function template for converting time_point to __gthread_time_t. * include/bits/this_thread_sleep.h (sleep_for): Use __to_timeout_timespec. libgcc, libstdc++: Make declarations no longer TU-local [PR115126]
In C++20, modules streaming check for exposures of TU-local entities.
In general exposing internal linkage functions in a header is liable to
cause ODR violations in C++, and this is now detected in a module
context.
This patch goes through and removes 'static' from many declarations
exposed through libstdc++ to prevent code like the following from
failing:
export module M;
extern "C++" {
#include <bits/stdc++.h>
}
Since gthreads is used from C as well, we need to choose whether to use
'inline' or 'static inline' depending on whether we're compiling for C
or C++ (since the semantics of 'inline' are different between the
languages). Additionally we need to remove static global variables, so
we migrate these to function-local statics to avoid the ODR issues.
There doesn't seem to be a good workaround for weakrefs, so I've left
them as-is and will work around it in the modules streaming code to
consider them as not TU-local.
The same issue occurs in the objective-C specific parts of gthreads, but
I'm not familiar with the surrounding context and we don't currently
test modules with Objective C++ anyway so I've left it as-is.

libstdc++: #ifdef out #pragma GCC system_header
In r15-3714-gd3a7302ec5985a I added -Wsystem-headers to the libstdc++ build flags to help catch problems in the library. This patch takes a different approach, of disabling the #pragma system_header unless _GLIBCXX_SYSHDR is defined. As a result, the testsuites will treat them as non-system-headers to get better warning coverage during regression testing of both gcc and libstdc++, not just when building the library. My rationale for the #ifdef instead of just removing the #pragma is the three G++ tests that want to test libstdc++ system header behavior, so we need a way to select it. This doesn't affect installed libraries, as they get their system-header status from the lookup path. But testsuite_flags --build-includes gives -I directives rather than -isystem. This patch doesn't change the headers in config/ because I'm not compiling with most of them, so won't see any warnings that need fixing. Adjusting them could happen later, or we can not bother. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (WARN_FLAGS): Remove -Wsystem-headers. * configure: Regenerate. * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: #ifdef libstdc++: Only include <condition_variable> in <shared_mutex> if needed
The <condition_variable> header is not small, so <shared_mutex> should not include it unless it actually needs std::condition_variable, which is only the case when we don't have pthread_rwlock_t and the POSIX Timers option. The <shared_mutex> header would be even smaller if we had a header for std::condition_variable (separate from std::condition_variable_any). That's already planned for a future change. And <memory_resource> would be even smaller if it was possible to get std::shared_mutex without std::shared_timed_mutex (which depends on <chrono>). For that to be effective, the synchronized_pool_resource would have to create its own simpler version of std::shared_lock without the timed waiting functions. I have no plans to do that. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/shared_mutex: Only include <condition_variable> when pthread_rwlock_t and POSIX timers are not available. libstdc++: Define and use chrono::is_clock for C++20
For C++20 the wait_until members of mutexes and condition variables are required to be ill-formed if given a clock that doesn't meet the requirements for a clock type. To implement that requirement this patch adds static assertions using the chrono::is_clock trait, and defines that trait. To avoid expensive checks for the common cases, the trait (and associated variable template) are explicitly specialized for the standard clock types. This also moves the filesystem::__file_clock type from <filesystem> to <chrono>, so that chrono::file_clock and chrono::file_time can be defined in <chrono> as required. * include/bits/fs_fwd.h (filesystem::__file_clock): Move to ... * include/std/chrono (filesystem::__file_clock): Here. When the target doesn't define PTHREAD_RWLOCK_INITIALIZER we use a wrapper around pthread_wrlock_init, but the wrapper only takes one argument and we try to call it with two. libstdc++: Fix try_lock_until and try_lock_shared_until on arbitrary clock
This is the equivalent to PR libstdc++/91906, but for shared_mutex. A non-standard clock may tick more slowly than std::chrono::steady_clock. This means that we risk returning false early when the specified timeout may not have expired. This can be avoided by looping until the timeout time as reported by the non-standard clock has been reached. Unfortunately, we have no way to tell whether the non-standard clock ticks more quickly that std::chrono::steady_clock. If it does then we risk returning later than would be expected, but that is unavoidable without waking up periodically to check, which would be rather too expensive. François Dumont pointed out[1] a flaw in an earlier version of this patch that revealed a hole in the test coverage, so I've added a new test that try_lock_until acts as try_lock if the timeout has already expired. [1] https://gcc.gnu.org/ml/libstdc++/2019-10/msg00021.html 2019-12-02 Mike Crowe <mac@mcrowe.com> Fix try_lock_until and try_lock_shared_until on arbitrary clock * include/std/shared_mutex (shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_until) (shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_shared_until): Loop until the absolute timeout time is reached as measured against the appropriate clock. * testsuite/30_threads/shared_timed_mutex/try_lock_until/1.cc: New file. libstdc++: Add full steady_clock support to shared_timed_mutex
The pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock and pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock functions were added to glibc in v2.30. They have also been added to Android Bionic. If these functions are available in the C library then they can be used to implement shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_until, shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_for, shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_shared_until and shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_shared_for so that they are no longer unaffected by the system clock being warped. (This is the shared_mutex equivalent of PR libstdc++/78237 for mutex.) If the new functions are available then steady_clock is deemed to be the "best" clock available which means that it is used for the relative try_lock_for calls and absolute try_lock_until calls using steady_clock and user-defined clocks. It's not possible to have _GLIBCXX_USE_PTHREAD_RWLOCK_CLOCKLOCK defined without _GLIBCXX_USE_PTHREAD_RWLOCK_T, so the requirement that the clock be the same as condition_variable is maintained. Calls explicitly using system_clock (aka high_resolution_clock) continue to use CLOCK_REALTIME via the old pthread_rwlock_timedrdlock and pthread_rwlock_timedwrlock functions. If the new functions are not available then system_clock is deemed to be the "best" clock available which means that the previous suboptimal behaviour remains. Additionally, the user-defined clock used with shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_for and shared_mutex::try_lock_shared_for may have higher precision than __clock_t. We may need to round the duration up to ensure that the timeout is long enough. (See __timed_mutex_impl::_M_try_lock_for) 2019-12-02 Mike Crowe <mac@mcrowe.com> Add full steady_clock support to shared_timed_mutex * acinclude.m4 (GLIBCXX_CHECK_PTHREAD_RWLOCK_CLOCKLOCK): Define to check for the presence of both pthread_rwlock_clockrdlock and pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock. * config.h.in: Regenerate. * configure.ac: Call GLIBCXX_USE_PTHREAD_RWLOCK_CLOCKLOCK. * configure: Regenerate. * include/std/shared_mutex (shared_timed_mutex): Define __clock_t as the best clock to use for relative waits. (shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_for) Round up wait duration if necessary. (shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_shared_for): Likewise. (shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_until): Use existing try_lock_until implementation for system_clock (which matches __clock_t when _GLIBCCXX_USE_PTHREAD_RWLOCK_CLOCKLOCK is not defined). Add new overload for steady_clock that uses pthread_rwlock_clockwrlock if it is available. Simplify overload for non-standard clock to just call try_lock_for with a relative timeout. (shared_timed_mutex::try_lock_shared_until): Likewise. From-SVN: r278903 |

Implement std::pmr::synchronized_pool_resource
Define the thread-safe pool resource, using a shared_mutex to allow multiple threads to concurrently allocate from thread-specific pools. Define new weak symbols for the pthread_rwlock_t functions, to avoid making libstdc++.so depend on libpthread.so When the necessary Gthread support is absent only define the feature-test macro to 1, rather than 201603. Remove <chrono> dependency on _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT_TR1
By adding fallback definitions of std::intmax_t and std::uintmax_t it's possible to define <ratio> without _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT_TR1. This in turn allows most of <chrono> to be defined, which removes the dependency on _GLIBCXX_USE_C99_STDINT_TR1 for all of the C++11 concurrency features.
