libstdc++: #ifdef out #pragma GCC system_header
In r15-3714-gd3a7302ec5985a I added -Wsystem-headers to the libstdc++ build flags to help catch problems in the library. This patch takes a different approach, of disabling the #pragma system_header unless _GLIBCXX_SYSHDR is defined. As a result, the testsuites will treat them as non-system-headers to get better warning coverage during regression testing of both gcc and libstdc++, not just when building the library. My rationale for the #ifdef instead of just removing the #pragma is the three G++ tests that want to test libstdc++ system header behavior, so we need a way to select it. This doesn't affect installed libraries, as they get their system-header status from the lookup path. But testsuite_flags --build-includes gives -I directives rather than -isystem. This patch doesn't change the headers in config/ because I'm not compiling with most of them, so won't see any warnings that need fixing. Adjusting them could happen later, or we can not bother. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (WARN_FLAGS): Remove -Wsystem-headers. * configure: Regenerate. * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: #ifdef libstdc++: Ensure pmr aliases work without <memory_resource>
Currently the alias templates for std::pmr::vector, std::pmr::string etc. are defined using a forward declaration for polymorphic_allocator. This means you can't actually use the alias templates unless you also include <memory_resource>. The rationale for that is that it's a fairly large header, and most users don't need it. This isn't uncontroversial though, and LWG 3681 questions whether it's even conforming. This change adds a new <bits/memory_resource.h> header with the minimum needed to use polymorphic_allocator and the std::pmr container aliases. Including <memory_resource> is still necessary to use the program-wide resource objects, or the pool resources or monotonic buffer resource. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/Makefile.am: Add new header. * include/Makefile.in: Regenerate. * include/bits/memory_resource.h: New file. * include/std/deque: Include <bits/memory_resource.h>. * include/std/forward_list: Likewise. * include/std/list: Likewise. * include/std/map: Likewise. * include/std/memory_resource (pmr::memory_resource): Move to new <bits/memory_resource.h> header. libstdc++: Add attributes to functions in <memory_resource>
Add attributes to the accessors for the global memory resource objects, to allow the compiler to eliminate redundant calls to them. For example, multiple calls to std::pmr::new_delete_resource() will always return the same object, and so the compiler can replace them with a single call. Ideally we would like adjacent calls to std::pmr::get_default_resource() to be combined into a single call by the CSE pass. The 'pure' attribute would permit that. However, the standard requires that calls to std::pmr::set_default_resource() synchronize with subsequent calls to std::pmr::get_default_resource(). With 'pure' the DCE pass might eliminate seemingly redundant calls to std::pmr::get_default_resource(). That might be unsafe, because the caller might be relying on the associated synchronization. We could use a hypothetical attribute that allows CSE but not DCE, but we don't have one. So it can't be 'pure'. Also add [[nodiscard]] to equality operators. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/memory_resource (new_delete_resource): Add nodiscard, returns_nonnull and const attributes. libstdc++: Specialize allocator_traits<pmr::polymorphic_allocator<T>>
This adds a partial specialization of allocator_traits, similar to what was already done for std::allocator. This means that most uses of polymorphic_allocator via the traits can avoid the metaprogramming overhead needed to deduce the properties from polymorphic_allocator. In addition, I'm changing polymorphic_allocator::delete_object to invoke the destructor (or pseudo-destructor) directly, rather than calling allocator_traits::destroy, which calls polymorphic_allocator::destroy (which is deprecated). This is observable if a user has specialized allocator_traits<polymorphic_allocator<Foo>> and expects to see its destroy member function called. I consider explicit specializations of allocator_traits to be wrong-headed, and this use case seems unnecessary to support. So delete_object just invokes the destructor directly. Signed-off-by: Jonathan Wakely <jwakely@redhat.com> libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/memory_resource (polymorphic_allocator::delete_object): Call destructor directly instead of using destroy. (allocator_traits<polymorphic_allocator<T>>): Define partial specialization. |

libstdc++: Reduce header dependencies on <array> and <utility>
This refactoring reduces the memory usage and compilation time to parse a number of headers that depend on std::pair, std::tuple or std::array. Previously the headers for these class templates were all intertwined, due to the common dependency on std::tuple_size, std::tuple_element and their std::get overloads. This decouples the headers by moving some parts of <utility> into a new <bits/utility.h> header. This means that <array> and <tuple> no longer need to include the whole of <utility>, and <tuple> no longer needs to include <array>. This decoupling benefits headers such as <thread> and <scoped_allocator> which only need std::tuple, and so no longer have to parse std::array. Some other headers such as <any>, <optional> and <variant> no longer need to include <utility> just for the std::in_place tag types, so do not have to parse the std::pair definitions. Removing direct uses of <utility> also means that the std::rel_ops namespace is not transitively declared by other headers. libstdc++: Reduce header dependencies in and on <memory>
By moving std::make_obj_using_allocator and the related "utility functions for uses-allocator construction" to a new header, we can avoid including the whole of <memory> in <scoped_allocator> and <memory_resource>. In order to simplify the implementation of those utility functions they now use concepts unconditionally. They are no longer defined if __cpp_concepts is not defined. To simplify the code that uses those functions I've introduced a __cpp_lib_make_obj_using_allocator feature test macro (not specified in the standard, which might be an oversight). That allows the code in <memory_resource> and <scoped_allocator> to check the feature test macro to decide whether to use the new utilities, or fall back to the C++17 code. At the same time, this reshuffles some of the headers included by <memory> so that they are (mostly?) self-contained. libstdc++: Reduce monotonic_buffer_resource overallocation [PR 96942]
The primary reason for this change is to reduce the size of buffers allocated by std::pmr::monotonic_buffer_resource. Previously, a new buffer would always add the size of the linked list node (11 bytes) and then round up to the next power of two. This results in a huge increase if the expected size of the next buffer is already a power of two. For example, if the resource is constructed with a desired initial size of 4096 the first buffer it allocates will be std::bit_ceil(4096+11) which is 8192. If the user has carefully selected the initial size to match their expected memory requirements then allocating double that amount wastes a lot of memory. After this patch the allocated size will be rounded up to a 64-byte boundary, instead of to a power of two. This means for an initial size of 4096 only 4160 bytes get allocated. Previously only the base-2 logarithm of the size was stored, which could be stored in a single 8-bit integer. Now that the size isn't always a power of two we need to use more bits to store it. As the size is always a multiple of 64 the low six bits are not needed, and so we can use the same approach that the pool resources already use of storing the base-2 logarithm of the alignment in the low bits that are not used for the size. To avoid code duplication, a new aligned_size<N> helper class is introduced by this patch, which is then used by both the pool resources' big_block type and the monotonic_buffer_resource::_Chunk type. Originally the big_block type used two bit-fields to store the size and alignment in the space of a single size_t member. The aligned_size type uses a single size_t member and uses masks and bitwise operations to manipulate the size and alignment values. This results in better code than the old version, because the bit-fields weren't optimally ordered for little endian architectures, so the alignment was actually stored in the high bits, not the unused low bits, requiring additional shifts to calculate the values. Using bitwise operations directly avoids needing to reorder the bit-fields depending on the endianness. While adapting the _Chunk and big_block types to use aligned_size<N> I also added checks for size overflows (technically, unsigned wraparound). The memory resources now ensure that when they require an allocation that is too large to represent in size_t they will request SIZE_MAX bytes from the upstream resource, rather than requesting a small value that results from wrapround. The testsuite is enhanced to verify this. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: PR libstdc++/96942 * include/std/memory_resource (monotonic_buffer_resource::do_allocate): Use __builtin_expect when checking if a new buffer needs to be allocated from the upstream resource, and for checks for edge cases like zero sized buffers and allocations. * src/c++17/memory_resource.cc (aligned_size): New class template. libstdc++: Replace __int_limits with __numeric_traits_integer
I recently added std::__detail::__int_limits as a lightweight alternative to std::numeric_limits, forgetting that the values it provides (digits, min and max) are already provided by __gnu_cxx::__numeric_traits. libstdc++: Add lightweight replacement for std::numeric_limits (PR 92546)
Many uses of std::numeric_limits in C++17 and C++20 features only really need the min(), max() and digits constants for integral types. By adding __detail::__int_limits we can avoid including the whole <limits> header. The <limits> header isn't especially large, but avoiding it still gives small savings in compilation time and memory usage for the compiler. There are also C++11 features that could benefit from this change (e.g. <bits/hashtable_policy.h> and <bits/uniform_int_dist.h>) but I won't change those until stage 1. The implementation of __int_limits assumes two's complement integers, which is true for all targets supported by GCC. libstdc++: Define memory resource key functions non-inline (PR93208)
This prevents the vtables and RTTI from being emitted in every object file that uses memory_resource and monotonic_buffer_resource. Objects compiled by GCC 9.1 or 9.2 will contain inline definitions of the destructors, vtable and RTTI, but this is harmless. Ensure pool resources always use normal mode vector
The __pool_resource::_M_unpooled member was declared with type std::vector, which means that the type depends on whether debug mode is active or not. Because the non-inline definitions in src/c++17/memory_resource.cc are never compiled with debug mode, the type declared in the header doesn't match the type in the library definitions, leading to undefined behaviour. The solution is to ensure the header always uses the non-debug vector, even when debug mode is active. To make this easier a new alias template is defined: _GLIBCXX_STD_C::pmr::vector. * include/std/memory_resource (__pool_resource::_M_unpooled): Use normal mode vector, even for debug mode. * include/std/vector [_GLIBCXX_DEBUG] (_GLIBCXX_STD_C::pmr::vector): Define alias template for normal mode vector.
