libstdc++: Make std::expected nodiscard [PR119197]
The new test includes two lines that currently do not warn because of GCC compiler bug PR85973; the lines that do warn are the more important cases. libstdc++: Make std::expected trivially copy/move assignable (LWG 4026)
This is the subject of two NB comments on C++26 which seem likely to be approved. We're allowed to make this change as QoI anyway, even if it isn't approved for the standard, and it should apply to C++23 as well to avoid ABI changes between C++23 and C++26. As shown in the updates to the test, defaulted special members can have noexcept(false) even if they would be noexcept(true) by default. The new defaulted operator= overloads added by this commit have conditional noexcept-specifiers that match the conditions of the non-trivial assignments, propagating any noexcept(false) on trivial special members of the T and E types. We could strengthen the noexcept for the trivial operators, but propagating the conditions from the underlying types is probably what users expect, if they've bothered to put noexcept(false) on their defaulted special members. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/expected (__expected::__trivially_replaceable) (__expected::__usable_for_assign) (__expected::__usable_for_trivial_assign) (__expected::__can_reassign_type): New concepts. (expected::operator=): Adjust constraints on existing overloads and add defaulted overload. libstdc++: Implement C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types
The following patch attempts to implement the C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types paper. This is quite complicated, because most of these classes which should be constexpr-ized use solely or mostly out of line definitions in libstdc++, both for historical, code size and dual ABI reasons, so that one can throw these as exceptions between TUs with old vs. new (or vice versa) ABIs. For this reason, logic_error/runtime_error and classes derived from it have the old ABI std::string object inside of them and the exported APIs from libstdc++.so.6 ensure the right thing. Now, because new invoked during constant evaluation needs to be deleted during the same constant evaluation and can't leak into the constant expressions, I think we don't have to use COW strings under the hood (which aren't constexpr I guess because of reference counting/COW) and we can use something else, the patch uses heap allocated std::string object (where __cow_constexpr_string class has just a pointer to that). As I think we still want to hide the ugly details if !consteval in the library, the patch exports 8 __cow_string class symbols (6 existing which were previously just not exported and 2 new ones) and if !consteval calls those through extern "C" _Zmangled_name symbols. The functions are always_inline. And then logic_error etc. have for C++26 (precisely for __cpp_lib_constexpr_exceptions >= 202502L) constexpr definitions of cdtors/methods. This results in slightly larger code (a few insns at most) at runtime for C++26, e.g. instead of calling say some logic error cdtor/method with 2 arguments it calls some __cow_string one with 2 arguments but + 8 bytes pointer additions on both. The patch also removes the __throw_format_error forward declaration which apparently wasn't needed for anything as all __throw_format_error users were either in <format> or included <format> before the uses, reverts the https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/libstdc++/2025-July/062598.html patch and makes sure __throw_* functions (only those for exception types which the P3378R2 or P3068R5 papers made constexpr usable and there are actually constexpr/consteval uses of those) are constexpr for C++26 constexpr exceptions. The patch does that by splitting the bits/functexcept.h header: 1) bits/functexcept.h stays for the __throw_* functions which are (at least for now) never constexpr (the <ios>, <system_error>, <future> and <functional> std::exception derived classes) or are never used or never used in constexpr/consteval contexts (<exception>, <typeinfo> std::exception derived classes and std::range_error). 2) bits/new_{throw,except}.h for __throw_bad_alloc/__throw_bad_array_new_length and std::bad_alloc/std::bad_array_new_length (where <new> includes <bits/new_except.h> and <bits/new_throw.h> as well for the C++26 constexpr exceptions case) 3) for the most complicated <stdexcept> stuff, one header addition to bits/stdexcept.h one header for the __throw_logic_error etc. forward declarations, one header for the __throw_logic_error etc. definitions and one header without header guards which will depending on __glibcxx_exc_in_string include one or the other because <string> vs. <string_view> vs. <stdexcept> have heavy interdependencies 2025-12-11 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR libstdc++/121114 libstdc++-v3/ * include/bits/version.def: Implement C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types. libstdc++: Implement LWG 4366 for std::expected comparisons
This modifies the equality comparisons for std::expected so that they do not use explicit conversions to bool, to match the constraints which are specified in terms of "convertible to" which implies implicitly convertible. As a result of those changes, we cannot use logical expressions with && or || that involve comparisons of the contained values, because x && (*y == *z) might do the wrong thing if *y == *z does not return bool. Also add [[nodiscard]] attributes which were missing. The new lwg4366.cc testcase is a dg-do run test not dg-do compile, because the original example won't compile with libstdc++ even after these fixes. We constrain the std::expected comparison operators with std::convertible_to<bool> and the pathological Bool type in the issue doesn't satisfy that concept. So the new test replaces the deleted explicit conversion oeprator in the issue with one that isn't deleted but terminates if called. This ensures we don't call it, thus ensuring that std::expected's comparisons do implicit conversions only. It's unclear to me whether using the convertible_to concept in std::expected comparisons is conforming, or if we should switch to an __implicitly_convertible_to<bool> concept which only uses std::is_convertible_v<T, bool> and doesn't check for explicit conversions. That can be addressed separately from this change. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/expected (operator==): Use implicit conversion to bool and do not use logical && and || with operands of unknown types. Add nodiscard attributes. * testsuite/20_util/expected/equality.cc: Test some missing cases which were not covered previously. * testsuite/20_util/expected/lwg4366.cc: New test. libstdc++: Fix constraint recursion in std::expected's operator== [PR119714]
This std::expected friend operator== is prone to constraint recursion after CWG 2369 for the same reason as basic_const_iterator's comparison operators were before the r15-7757-g4342c50ca84ae5 workaround. This patch works around the constraint recursion here in a similar manner, by making the function parameter of type std::expected dependent in a trivial way. libstdc++: Add missing static_assert to std::expected<void,E>::value()&&
The r15-2326-gea435261ad58ea change missed a static_assert for is_move_constructible_v in expected<cv void, E>::value()&&. When exceptions are enabled, the program is ill-formed if the error type is not move constructible, because we can't construct the std::bad_expected_access. But prior to r15-7856-gd87c0d5443ba86, using -fno-exceptions meant that we never constructed an exception, so didn't need to copy/move the error value. So that we don't rely on the r15-7856-gd87c0d5443ba86 change to the _GLIBCXX_THROW_OR_ABORT macro to consistently enforce the Mandates: conditions whether exceptions are enabled or not, we should check the requirement explicitly. This adds the missing static_assert. It also adds a test that verifies the Mandates: conditions added by LWG 3843 and 3490 are enforced even with -fno-exceptions. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/expected (expected<cv void,E>::value()&&): Add missing static_assert for LWG 3940. * testsuite/20_util/expected/lwg3843.cc: New test. libstdc++: #ifdef out #pragma GCC system_header
In r15-3714-gd3a7302ec5985a I added -Wsystem-headers to the libstdc++ build flags to help catch problems in the library. This patch takes a different approach, of disabling the #pragma system_header unless _GLIBCXX_SYSHDR is defined. As a result, the testsuites will treat them as non-system-headers to get better warning coverage during regression testing of both gcc and libstdc++, not just when building the library. My rationale for the #ifdef instead of just removing the #pragma is the three G++ tests that want to test libstdc++ system header behavior, so we need a way to select it. This doesn't affect installed libraries, as they get their system-header status from the lookup path. But testsuite_flags --build-includes gives -I directives rather than -isystem. This patch doesn't change the headers in config/ because I'm not compiling with most of them, so won't see any warnings that need fixing. libstdc++: Do not use std::expected::value() in monadic ops (LWG 3938)
The monadic operations in std::expected always check has_value() so we can avoid the execptional path in value() and the assertions in error() by accessing _M_val and _M_unex directly. This means that the monadic operations no longer require _M_unex to be copyable so that it can be thrown from value(), as modified by LWG 3938. This also fixes two incorrect uses of std::move in transform(F&&)& and transform(F&&) const& which I found while making these changes. Now that move-only error types are supported, it's possible to properly test the constraints that LWG 3877 added to and_then and transform. The lwg3877.cc test now does that. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/expected (expected::and_then, expected::or_else) (expected::transform_error): Use _M_val and _M_unex instead of calling value() and error(), as per LWG 3938. (expected::transform): Likewise. Remove incorrect std::move calls from lvalue overloads. (expected<void, E>::and_then, expected<void, E>::or_else) (expected<void, E>::transform): Use _M_unex instead of calling error(). * testsuite/20_util/expected/lwg3877.cc: Add checks for and_then and transform, and for std::expected<void, E>. * testsuite/20_util/expected/lwg3938.cc: New test. |

libstdc++: Apply small fix from LWG 3843 to std::expected
LWG 3843 adds some type requirements to std::expected::value to ensure that it can correctly copy the error value if it needs to throw an exception. We don't need to do anything to enforce that, because it will already be ill-formed if the type can't be copied. The issue also makes a small drive-by fix to ensure that a const E& is copied from the non-const value()& overload, which this change implements. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/expected (expected::value() &): Use const lvalue for unex member passed to bad_expected_access constructor, as per LWG 3843. |

libstdc++: Fixes for std::expected
This fixes some bugs in the swap functions for std::expected. It also disables the noexcept-specifiers for equality operators, because those are problematic when querying whether a std::expected is equality comparable. The operator==(const expected<T,E>&, const U&) function is not constrained, so is viable for comparing expected<T,E> with expected<void,G>, but then we get an error from the noexcept-specifier. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/expected (expected::_M_swap_val_unex): Guard the correct object. libstdc++: Remove unnecessary variant member in std::expected
Hui Xie pointed out that we don't need a dummy member in the union, because all constructors always initialize either _M_val or _M_unex.
