libstdc++: Fix std::erase_if behavior for std::__debug containers
Complete fix of std::erase_if/std::erase for all std::__debug containers and __gnu_debug::basic_string. Make sure that iterators erased by this function will be properly detected as such by the debug container and so considered as invalid. Doing so introduce a new std::__detail::__erase_if function dealing, similarly to std::__detail::__erase_node_if, with non-node containers. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/erase_if.h (__detail::__erase_if): New. * include/debug/deque (std::erase_if<>(__debug::deque<>&, _Pred)): Use latter. * include/debug/inplace_vector (std::erase_if<>(__debug::inplace_vector<>&, _Pred)): Likewise. * include/debug/vector (std::erase_if<>(__debug::vector<>&, _Pred)): Likewise. * include/std/deque: Include erase_if.h. libstdc++: Implement C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types
The following patch attempts to implement the C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types paper. This is quite complicated, because most of these classes which should be constexpr-ized use solely or mostly out of line definitions in libstdc++, both for historical, code size and dual ABI reasons, so that one can throw these as exceptions between TUs with old vs. new (or vice versa) ABIs. For this reason, logic_error/runtime_error and classes derived from it have the old ABI std::string object inside of them and the exported APIs from libstdc++.so.6 ensure the right thing. Now, because new invoked during constant evaluation needs to be deleted during the same constant evaluation and can't leak into the constant expressions, I think we don't have to use COW strings under the hood (which aren't constexpr I guess because of reference counting/COW) and we can use something else, the patch uses heap allocated std::string object (where __cow_constexpr_string class has just a pointer to that). As I think we still want to hide the ugly details if !consteval in the library, the patch exports 8 __cow_string class symbols (6 existing which were previously just not exported and 2 new ones) and if !consteval calls those through extern "C" _Zmangled_name symbols. The functions are always_inline. And then logic_error etc. have for C++26 (precisely for __cpp_lib_constexpr_exceptions >= 202502L) constexpr definitions of cdtors/methods. This results in slightly larger code (a few insns at most) at runtime for C++26, e.g. instead of calling say some logic error cdtor/method with 2 arguments it calls some __cow_string one with 2 arguments but + 8 bytes pointer additions on both. The patch also removes the __throw_format_error forward declaration which apparently wasn't needed for anything as all __throw_format_error users were either in <format> or included <format> before the uses, reverts the https://gcc.gnu.org/pipermail/libstdc++/2025-July/062598.html patch and makes sure __throw_* functions (only those for exception types which the P3378R2 or P3068R5 papers made constexpr usable and there are actually constexpr/consteval uses of those) are constexpr for C++26 constexpr exceptions. The patch does that by splitting the bits/functexcept.h header: 1) bits/functexcept.h stays for the __throw_* functions which are (at least for now) never constexpr (the <ios>, <system_error>, <future> and <functional> std::exception derived classes) or are never used or never used in constexpr/consteval contexts (<exception>, <typeinfo> std::exception derived classes and std::range_error). 2) bits/new_{throw,except}.h for __throw_bad_alloc/__throw_bad_array_new_length and std::bad_alloc/std::bad_array_new_length (where <new> includes <bits/new_except.h> and <bits/new_throw.h> as well for the C++26 constexpr exceptions case) 3) for the most complicated <stdexcept> stuff, one header addition to bits/stdexcept.h one header for the __throw_logic_error etc. forward declarations, one header for the __throw_logic_error etc. definitions and one header without header guards which will depending on __glibcxx_exc_in_string include one or the other because <string> vs. <string_view> vs. <stdexcept> have heavy interdependencies 2025-12-11 Jakub Jelinek <jakub@redhat.com> PR libstdc++/121114 libstdc++-v3/ * include/bits/version.def: Implement C++26 P3378R2 - constexpr exception types. libstdc++: Fix std::erase_if behavior for std::__debug::deque
std::erase and std::erase_if are broken for users directly referencing __gnu_debug::deque in their code that is to say without activating the _GLIBCXX_DEBUG mode. The iterators potentially invalidated by the erase operations are not detected by the __gnu_debug::deque container and so won't be reported as invalidated. We need explicit std::erase and std::erase_if implementations for std::__debug::deque which will work also when _GLIBCXX_DEBUG mode is activated. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/debug/deque (std::erase_if<>(std::__debug::deque<>&, _Pred)): New. libstdc++: Simplify std::erase functions for sequence containers
This removes the use of std::ref that meant that __remove_if used an indirection through the reference, which might be a pessimization. Users can always use std::ref to pass expensive predicates into erase_if, but we shouldn't do it unconditionally. We can std::move the predicate so that if it's not cheap to copy and the user didn't use std::ref, then we try to use a cheaper move instead of a copy. There's no reason that std::erase shouldn't just be implemented by forwarding to std::erase_if. I probably should have done that in r12-4083-gacf3a21cbc26b3 when std::erase started to call __remove_if directly. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/std/deque (erase_if): Move predicate instead of wrapping with std::ref. libstdc++: Eliminate __gnu_cxx::__ops function objects
This removes the indirect functors from <bits/predefined_ops.h> that are used by our STL algorithms. Currently we wrap all predicates and values into callables which accept iterator arguments, and automatically dereference the iterators. With this change we no longer do that dereferencing and so all predicates are passed values not iterators, and the algorithms that invoke those predicates must dereference the iterators. This avoids wrapping user-provided predicates into another predicate that does the dereferencing. User-provided predicates are now passed unchanged to our internal algos like __search_n. For the overloads that take a value instead of a predicate, we still need to create a predicate that does comparison to the value, but we can now use std::less<void> and std::equal_to<void> as the base predicate and bind the value to those base predicates. Because the "transparent operators" std::less<void> and std::equal_to<void> were not added until C++14, this change defines those explicit specializations unconditionally for C++98 and C++11 too (but the default template arguments that make std::less<> and std::equal_to<> refer to those specializations are still only present for C++14 and later, because we don't need to rely on those default template arguments for our internal uses). When binding a predicate and a value into a new call wrapper, we now decide whether to store the predicate by value when it's an empty type or a scalar (such as a function pointer). This avoids a double-indirection through function pointers, and avoids storing and invoking stateless empty functors through a reference. For C++11 and later we also use [[no_unique_address]] to avoid wasted storage for empty predicates (which includes all standard relational ops, such as std::less). The call wrappers in bits/predefined_ops.h all have non-const operator() because we can't be sure that the predicates they wrap are const-invocable. The requirements in [algorithms.requirements] for Predicate and BinaryPredicate template arguments require pred(*i) to be valid, but do not require that std::to_const(pred)(*i) has to be valid, and similarly for binary_pred. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/predefined_ops.h (equal_to, less): Define aliases for std::equal_to<void> and std::less<void>. libstdc++: Define __cpp_lib_containers_ranges in appropriate headers [PR111055]
This is final piece of P1206R7, adding a feature test macros, as range constructors and member operations are now implemented for all containers and adaptors. libstdc++: #ifdef out #pragma GCC system_header
In r15-3714-gd3a7302ec5985a I added -Wsystem-headers to the libstdc++ build flags to help catch problems in the library. This patch takes a different approach, of disabling the #pragma system_header unless _GLIBCXX_SYSHDR is defined. As a result, the testsuites will treat them as non-system-headers to get better warning coverage during regression testing of both gcc and libstdc++, not just when building the library. My rationale for the #ifdef instead of just removing the #pragma is the three G++ tests that want to test libstdc++ system header behavior, so we need a way to select it. This doesn't affect installed libraries, as they get their system-header status from the lookup path. But testsuite_flags --build-includes gives -I directives rather than -isystem. This patch doesn't change the headers in config/ because I'm not compiling with most of them, so won't see any warnings that need fixing. Adjusting them could happen later, or we can not bother. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * acinclude.m4 (WARN_FLAGS): Remove -Wsystem-headers. * configure: Regenerate. * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: #ifdef libstdc++: add default template parameters to algorithms
This implements P2248R8 + P3217R0, both approved for C++26. The changes are mostly mechanical; the struggle is to keep readability with the pre-P2248 signatures. * For containers, "classic STL" algorithms and their parallel versions, introduce a macro and amend their declarations/definitions with it. The macro either expands to the defaulted parameter or to nothing in pre-C++26 modes. * For range algorithms, we need to reorder their template parameters. I've done so unconditionally, because users cannot rely on template parameters of algorithms (this is explicitly authorized by [algorithms.requirements]/15). The defaults are then hidden behind another macro. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/iterator_concepts.h: Add projected_value_t. * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: Add the default template parameter to the relevant forward declarations. * include/pstl/glue_algorithm_defs.h: Likewise. * include/bits/ranges_algo.h: Add the default template parameter to range-based algorithms. * include/bits/ranges_algobase.h: Likewise. * include/bits/ranges_util.h: Likewise. * include/bits/ranges_base.h: Add helper macros. * include/bits/stl_iterator_base_types.h: Add helper macro. * include/bits/version.def: Add the new feature-testing macro. * include/bits/version.h: Regenerate. * include/std/algorithm: Pull the feature-testing macro. * include/std/ranges: Likewise. * include/std/deque: Pull the feature-testing macro, add the default for std::erase. * include/std/forward_list: Likewise. * include/std/list: Likewise. * include/std/string: Likewise. * include/std/vector: Likewise. * testsuite/23_containers/default_template_value.cc: New test. * testsuite/25_algorithms/default_template_value.cc: New test. libstdc++: Only declare feature test macros in standard headers
This change moves the definitions of feature test macros (or strictly speaking, the requests for <bits/version.h> to define them) so that only standard headers define them. For example, <bits/shared_ptr.h> will no longer define macros related to std::shared_ptr, only <memory> and <version> will define them. This means that __cpp_lib_shared_ptr_arrays will not be defined by <future> or by other headers that include <bits/shared_ptr.h>. It will only be defined when <memory> has been included. This will discourage users from relying on transitive includes. As a result, internal headers that need to query the macros should use the internal macros like __glibcxx_shared_ptr_arrays instead of __cpp_lib_shared_ptr_arrays, as those internal macros are defined by the internal headers after icluding <bits/version.h>. There are some exceptions to this rule, because __cpp_lib_is_constant_evaluated is defined by bits/c++config.h and so is available everywhere, and __cpp_lib_three_way_comparison is defined by <compare> which several headers are explicitly specified to include, so its macro is guaranteed to be usable too. N.B. not many internal headers actually need an explicit include of <bits/version.h>, because most of them include <type_traits> and so get all the __glibcxx_foo internal macros from there. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/algorithmfwd.h: Do not define standard feature test macro here. * include/bits/align.h: Likewise. libstdc++: Ensure pmr aliases work without <memory_resource>
Currently the alias templates for std::pmr::vector, std::pmr::string etc. are defined using a forward declaration for polymorphic_allocator. This means you can't actually use the alias templates unless you also include <memory_resource>. The rationale for that is that it's a fairly large header, and most users don't need it. This isn't uncontroversial though, and LWG 3681 questions whether it's even conforming. This change adds a new <bits/memory_resource.h> header with the minimum needed to use polymorphic_allocator and the std::pmr container aliases. Including <memory_resource> is still necessary to use the program-wide resource objects, or the pool resources or monotonic buffer resource. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/Makefile.am: Add new header. * include/Makefile.in: Regenerate. * include/bits/memory_resource.h: New file. * include/std/deque: Include <bits/memory_resource.h>. * include/std/forward_list: Likewise. * include/std/list: Likewise. * include/std/map: Likewise. * include/std/memory_resource (pmr::memory_resource): Move to new <bits/memory_resource.h> header. libstdc++: Avoid debug checks in uniform container erasure functions
In commit r12-4083 I tried to make the std::erase and std::erase_if function avoid the unnecessary overhead of safe iterators. It didn't work, for two reasons. Firstly, for the RB tree containers the __niter_base function is a no-op (because the iterators aren't random access) so the safe iterators were still used. Secondly, for the cases where __niter_base did remove the safe iterator layer, there was still unnecessary overhead to create a new safe iterator and link it to the container. This solves the problem by simply binding a reference to the non-debug version of the conainer. For normal mode this is a no-op, and for debug mode it binds a reference to the debug container's base class. That means the rest of the function operates directly on the non-debug container, and avoids all checking. For std::basic_string there's no need to unwrap anything, because we use std::basic_string directly in debug mode anyway. libstdc++-v3/ChangeLog: * include/bits/erase_if.h (__erase_nodes_if): Remove redundant __niter_base calls. * include/std/string (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/std/deque (erase, erase_if): Access non-debug container directly. * include/std/map (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/std/set (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/std/unordered_map (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/std/unordered_set (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/std/vector (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/experimental/deque (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/experimental/map (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/experimental/set (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/experimental/unordered_map (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/experimental/unordered_set (erase, erase_if): Likewise. * include/experimental/vector (erase, erase_if): Likewise. |
