This reflects some assumptions we have on our headers:
- <openssl/foo.h> pulls in <openssl/base.h>. In particular, the
canonical FOO typedefs for foo_st all live forward declared in
<opessl/base.h>, but including <openssl/foo.h> is sufficient to use
FOO.
- <openssl/base.h> pulls in <stdint.h> and <stddef.h> so we don't have
to keep including it.
Add IWYU exports to reflect this so that clang's include cleaner gets
less upset. It's a bit of a blunt instrument because it also means that
<openssl/foo.h> lets you use the forward-declared BAR typedef, and
downstream projects might still prefer to explicit include <stdint.h>
when they use it (we use it so much that it would be too much), but I
think this is fine.
NB: By adding these, we're essentially promising we won't include those
transitive includes because downstream code might accidentally start
relying on it.

We use the standard Apache 2.0 file header, described in "APPENDIX: How
to apply the Apache License to your work."
This was primarily automated by running:

As part of this, switch from taking fiat-crypto under MIT license to

accidentally drop any copyright lines:

tasn_*.c have two dependencies on the OID table: initializing
ASN1_OBJECTs to the undef object, and the ADB (ANY DEFINED BY)
machinery. Fix the first by pulling the entry out of the table. The
latter will be fixed by rewriting the certificate policy parser.

This function is probably not what you want. I think the
X509V3_EXT_METHOD and ASN1_STRING_TABLE_add stuff are the only cases
where you actually need an OID. Those, themselves, have problems with
conflicting registrations and aren't really necessary.
ASN1_STRING_TABLE_add has a similar warning on it. X509V3_EXT_METHOD is
not yet documented, but should get a similar warning when we document
it.

This cleans up the story with

our exported functions mutate ASN1_OBJECTS, with the exception of
ASN1_OBJECT_free, the object reuse mode of c2i_ASN1_OBJECT, and their
callers. Those functions check flags to correctly handle static
ASN1_OBJECTs.
For now, I've kept the struct definition in crypto/asn1 even though
ASN1_OBJECT is partially in crypto/obj. Since we prefer to cut
dependencies to crypto/asn1, we probably should rearrange this later.
I've also, for now, kept crypto/asn1/internal.h at C-style comments,
though our style story here is weird. (Maybe it's time to clang-format
crypto/asn1 and crypto/x509? Patches from upstream rarely directly apply
anyway, since we're a mix of 1.0.2 and 1.1.1 in crypto/x509.)
Update-Note: ASN1_OBJECT is now opaque. Callers should use accessors.

ASN1_OBJECTs are awkward. Sometimes they are static, when returned from
OBJ_nid2obj, and sometimes they are dynamic, when parsed from
crypto/asn1.
Most structures in crypto/asn1 need to support unknown OIDs and thus
must own their ASN1_OBJECTs. But they also may be initialized with
static ones in various APIs, such as X509_ALGOR_set0. To make that work,
ASN1_OBJECT_free detects static ASN1_OBJECTs and is a no-op.
Functions like X509_ALGOR_set0 take ownership, so OpenSSL has them take
a non-const ASN1_OBJECT*. To match, OBJ_nid2obj then returns a non-const
ASN1_OBJECT*, to signal that it is freeable.
However, this means OBJ_nid2obj's mutability doesn't match its return
type. In the fork, we switched OBJ_nid2obj to return const. But, in
doing so, we had to make X509_ALGOR_set0 and X509_PUBKEY_set0_param take
const ASN1_OBJECT, even though they would actually take ownership of
dynamic ASN1_OBJECTs. There are also a few internal casts with a TODO to
be const-correct.
Neither situation is ideal. (Perhaps a more sound model would be to copy
static ASN1_OBJECTs before putting them in most structs. But that would
not match current usage.) But I think aligning with OpenSSL is the
lesser evil here, since it avoids misleading set0 functions. Managing
ownership of ASN1_OBJECTs is much more common than mutating them. To
that end, I've added a note that ASN1_OBJECTs you didn't create must be
assumed immutable[*].
Update-Note: The change to OBJ_nid2obj should be compatible. The changes
to X509_PUBKEY_set0_param and X509_ALGOR_set0 may require fixing some
pointer types.
[*] This is *almost* honored by all of our functions. The exception is
c2i_ASN1_OBJECT, which instead checks the DYNAMIC flag as part of the
object reuse business. This would come up if we ever embedded
ASN1_OBJECTs directly in structs.

OBJ_txt2obj is currently implemented using BIGNUMs which is absurd. It
also depends on the giant OID table, which is undesirable. Write a new
one and expose the low-level function so Chromium can use it without the
OID table.

Although we are derived from 1.0.2, we mimic 1.1.0 in some ways around
our FOO_up_ref functions and opaque libssl types. This causes some
difficulties when porting third-party code as any OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER
checks for 1.1.0 APIs we have will be wrong.
Moreover, adding accessors without changing OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER can
break external projects. It is common to implement a compatibility
version of an accessor under #ifdef as a static function. This then
conflicts with our headers if we, unlike OpenSSL 1.0.2, have this
function.
This change switches OPENSSL_VERSION_NUMBER to 1.1.0 and atomically adds
enough accessors for software with 1.1.0 support already. The hope is
this will unblock hiding SSL_CTX and SSL_SESSION, which will be
especially useful with C++-ficiation. The cost is we will hit some
growing pains as more 1.1.0 consumers enter the ecosystem and we
converge on the right set of APIs to import from upstream.
It does not remove any 1.0.2 APIs, so we will not require that all
projects support 1.1.0. The exception is APIs which changed in 1.1.0 but
did not change the function signature. Those are breaking changes.
Specifically:
- SSL_CTX_sess_set_get_cb is now const-correct.
- X509_get0_signature is now const-correct.
For C++ consumers only, this change temporarily includes an overload
hack for SSL_CTX_sess_set_get_cb that keeps the old callback working.
This is a workaround for Node not yet supporting OpenSSL 1.1.0.
The version number is set at (the as yet unreleased) 1.1.0g to denote
that this change includes https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/4384.

OBJ_NAME in OpenSSL has an 'alias' field which some code consumes. We never
report anything OpenSSL considers an alias, so just leave it zero. It also has
a 'data' field which, confusingly, is a pointer to the EVP_CIPHER or EVP_MD
despite being a char pointer.
See calls to and implementation of OBJ_NAME_add in OpenSSL for comparison.

obj_mac.h is missing #include guards, so one cannot use NIDs without
pulling in the OBJ_* functions which depend on the giant OID table. Give
it #include guards, tidy up the style slightly, and also rename it to
nid.h which is a much more reasonable name.
obj_mac.h is kept as a forwarding header as, despite it being a little
screwy, some code #includes it anyway.

this case, implement it in terms of the similar functions in EVP so that
at least we only have one list of things.

This change fixes up several comments (many of which were spotted by
Kenny Root) and also changes doc.go to detect cases where comments don't
start with the correct word. (This is a common error.)

Running make_errors.go every time a function is renamed is incredibly
tedious. Plus we keep getting them wrong.
Instead, sample __func__ (__FUNCTION__ in MSVC) in the OPENSSL_PUT_ERROR macro
and store it alongside file and line number. This doesn't change the format of
ERR_print_errors, however ERR_error_string_n now uses the placeholder
"OPENSSL_internal" rather than an actual function name since that only takes
the uint32_t packed error code as input.
This updates err scripts to not emit the function string table. The
OPENSSL_PUT_ERROR invocations, for now, still include the extra
parameter. That will be removed in a follow-up.

This change marks public symbols as dynamically exported. This means
that it becomes viable to build a shared library of libcrypto and libssl
with -fvisibility=hidden.
On Windows, one not only needs to mark functions for export in a
component, but also for import when using them from a different
component. Because of this we have to build with
|BORINGSSL_IMPLEMENTATION| defined when building the code. Other
components, when including our headers, won't have that defined and then
the |OPENSSL_EXPORT| tag becomes an import tag instead. See the #defines
in base.h
In the asm code, symbols are now hidden by default and those that need
to be exported are wrapped by a C function.
In order to support Chromium, a couple of libssl functions were moved to
ssl.h from ssl_locl.h: ssl_get_new_session and ssl_update_cache.

Previously, public headers lived next to the respective code and there
were symlinks from include/openssl to them.
This doesn't work on Windows.
This change moves the headers to live in include/openssl. In cases where
some symlinks pointed to the same header, I've added a file that just
includes the intended target. These cases are all for backwards-compat.
